about

The band N.I.A. Punx formed in Cosenza in 1989 thanks to an idea of Giammarco De Vincenzo (vocals), Massimiliano Muoio (guitar) and Vincenzo Cribari (guitar); the first line-up also included Luca Scarpino on bass and Renato Sica on drums. After having previously tried to set up a punk band unsuccessfully, they debuted on 30th September 1989 with the name Nerds In Acid in a town festival, as opening act for the thrash metal Headcrasher. The baptism by fire came a few days later, when the two bands met again to open for Negazione on October 6th.
The initial period was characterised by live gigs at local level, where N.I.A. shared the stage with different bands (among them the Dutch band Primitive Action) and, in November 1990, they joined the Headcrasher at Forte Prenestino in Rome for their first relevant national gig. In 1991, they released the demo The Last Crime of Amerika (K7 Stimmate/Attacco Progressivo, 1991) with the contribution of Roby Vitari on drums, member of the Headcrasher. The first 1000 copies were soon sold-out and, by the end of the year, N.I.A. appeared in a two days Festival held at the CSOA Discarika in Foggia, along with several other bands including the Sicilian Nullafacenti.
In 1992, drummer Corrado Caruso from Desert Flowers of Rossano (CS) joined the band. N.I.A. played in Perugia with Contropotere, at the CSA Intifada in Empoli with the Voodoo Turn, and in Florence at the CSOA Ex-Emerson with the 17 Kanaks. Back in Calabria, they played live with the Killers, the core of the future The Kartoons. At the beginning of August, despite several setbacks, the band entered the recording studio to work on their first record. The first Summer Riot Tour went well and, in autumn, they returned to Foggia together with the Kina, touring with Stefano Giaccone from Franti.
In 1993, drummer Roby Vitari joined the band again for good, along with Danilo Giannetti on bass guitar. The late saxophonist and friend Giuseppe Macrina (known as Pippo) joined some live shows as a guest. The winter tour covered two gigs in Florence and, in spring, Scendere a Sud (LP Mister X/Attacco Progressivo, 1993) was released and presented in Rome at Forte Prenestino, at a memorable concert opened by Guastafeste and Block Of Flats. Later, N.I.A. played at Officina 99 in Naples in a two days Festival with Banda Bassotti. Then, at the end of July, they went back to the studio to record the Power Punk demo. The initial influences, from punk '77 to new wave, faded towards a stronger hardcore sound. The Summer Riot Tour 1993 kicked off at the first edition of the rock festival in Colosimi (CS) where they played with the Roman Mind Waltz and fellow citizens The Kartoons. In autumn of the same year, they played at El Paso, Turin, opening for the MDC Texans, true veterans of the hardcore movement.
In 1994, Marco Balestrino listed the song Circle of Power in the compilation Oi Against Silvio (CD Havin ‘A Laugh, 1994). The N.I.A. Punx played in Cosenza with the Turin-born Jester Beast and took part in the SHARP festival in Florence, along with Tremende, Vallanzaska and Distilleria '76. Then, they went back to Perugia and Spezzano (CS) to perform live in a mini festival with the Dutch band Bambix.
In 1995, the collaboration with Dario Adamic of Goodwill Records led to the publication of Do It Yourself (7 ' Goodwill Records - 1995) that covered tracks by Eversor, This Side Up, N.I.A., Fichissimi and Point Of View. The record was presented in Rome at the social center "Hai visto Quinto?" together with This side Up and Point Of View. Then, N.I.A. played at the CPA in Florence with Erode and joined the third edition of the Colosimirock Festival (CS) with Glacial Fear, Los Fastidios, Derozer, Melt and Monkey's Factory.
In 1996, the Blu Bus/Circus released We Bastard Motherfuckers vol. 1 (CD Blu Bus/Circus, 1996) containing the song The Party Must Go On. Then, they played again at the former CIM in Perugia together with WAYP, at the social center La Talpa e l'Orologio in Imperia and at the CPA in Florence along with Attaccabrighe, Nicotina and Coprofili. In the meantime, they started working on the project that led to the creation of their own independent label and distribution company, the MaN.I.A. Records.
In 1997, Street Punkers was released (CD MaN.I.A. Records, 1997). The compilation collects 20 of the most representative bands of the Italian punk scene of the time, from Klasse Kriminale to Raw Power. The CD was presented in Cosenza with the participation of Shandon, Meat For Dogs, N.I.A. and the debutants Mas Ruido in the spring of 1998.
In 1998, N.I.A. returned for the umpteenth time to the CPA in Florence along with Nabat, Killer Klown and Punkreas. In the same year, Italia Skunk (12 'D.I.Y. Records, 1998) was released for the D.I.Y. label, Viterbo, which included the song First: Hate! dedicated to the native land. Then, after almost 2 years, in the spring of 2000 the band took part in a charity initiative organized by the Ultrà Cosenza in Castrolibero (CS). Later on, after nearly 5 years of silence, they performed two reunions with their friend Anthony Calabrese on bass, namely for the New Year’s Eve 2005 in Cosenza and again in March 2005, when the band went back to their hometown to open for the Frontiera.
-----------------------
The digipack CD contains everything the band has released so far over the years, from the demo to the album, along with their various participations in compilations, also including three previously unreleased tracks.
Old photos add value to this anthology that aims at highlighting a band that wrote some real Punk anthems in the years (late 80s and early 90s) when the Italian and world HC-Punk scene was slowly shattering. A time when the most significant bands had already broken up or were changing attitude while the new ones were still in a developing phase.
In short, the N.I.A. Punx were the trait d'union between the old school scene and those bands that would have represented the new generation of the most combative punk wave. And just in that peculiar period, characterised by a general retreat into the private life, N.I.A. fought to remind us not to ever get "on our knees"!!!
